I remember the first time I ever saw someone creating and recording music on an iPad. It was on an episode of CSI New York and the young music student was creating her own catchy little groove and dancing around the room to it. I was fascinated by how effortless she made it look and how quickly she could layer multiple tracks on a repeating loop and come up with something I was subsequently humming for days. Of course, shortly after that she was brutally murdered and the iPad was stolen by the murderer and it turned back into a regular CSI style murder mystery, but I was so taken with the iPad and her little tune I kept the episode for weeks just so I could replay that opening scene and watch her create that groove and dance to it.
Today with the right apps you can use an iPad as a tuner, a synthesizer, a beat-maker or drum machine, a multi-track recorder, an effects box, for ear-training and to learn theory and reading music, to read and learn guitar tablature, a metronome, a notation device for writing music, a DAW for mixing and mastering tracks, a place to keep track of and display lyrics, and even a way to write promotional materials and stay connected to friends and fans while traveling. All this from a little device that would fit in a purse. Amazing!
